As the Executive Director of the Hillel Jewish Student Center at Arizona State University (ASU), Debbie Kail brings over 17 years of rich experience in Jewish non-profit and higher education settings, making her a pivotal figure in fostering a vibrant Jewish community on campus. Under her leadership, Hillel has undergone a transformative shift from a staff-driven engagement model to one that empowers students to take the reins. This innovative approach has not only led to the establishment of a new student board but has also enriched the spiritual life on campus with the introduction of a Conservative prayer minyan, complementing the existing Reform minyan.
Debbie's commitment to student leadership development is evident in the creation of a new Jewish leadership development class, which successfully launched its first cohort in spring 2015 with ten enthusiastic participants. This initiative reflects her belief in cultivating individual relationships and nurturing the next generation of Jewish leaders. By facilitating student-led educational classes on prayer and contemporary "hot topics," Debbie has created a dynamic environment where students feel valued and engaged.
Her expertise in community development, programming, and event planning is complemented by her strong skills in publicity and fundraising, enabling her to effectively promote Hillel's mission and secure vital resources for its initiatives. With a keen eye for project management and a passion for public speaking, Debbie continues to inspire and mobilize students, ensuring that Hillel remains a welcoming and inclusive space for all Jewish students at ASU. Through her thoughtful leadership, Debbie Kail is not only shaping the future of Hillel at ASU but also making a lasting impact on the broader Jewish community.
