Thomas Dekorsy serves as the Director of the Institute for Technical Physics at the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR), where he leads cutting-edge research and development initiatives in high-power lasers, space debris detection and mitigation, and space situational awareness. With a robust scientific background in laser technology and nonlinear optics, Dekorsy is at the forefront of advancing optical air data systems and counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS). His expertise in THz technology and optoelectronics positions him as a pivotal figure in the integration of innovative solutions for complex aerospace challenges.
Under Dekorsy’s leadership, the Institute has grown to encompass over 80 dedicated professionals, fostering a collaborative environment that encourages interdisciplinary research and international cooperation. His role extends beyond administrative duties; he actively participates in scientific boards, contributing to the strategic direction of research initiatives that bridge the gap between fundamental science and practical application. Key projects under his guidance include the development of advanced laser systems for space applications and innovative methodologies for detecting and mitigating space debris, which are critical for ensuring the safety and sustainability of space operations.
Dekorsy’s commitment to excellence is reflected in his academic role as a Full Professor at Stuttgart University, where he imparts his knowledge in physics and nanofabrication to the next generation of scientists. His interdisciplinary approach, combining physics, chemistry, and advanced characterization techniques, enables him to tackle complex problems in the fields of physical chemistry and nanotechnology. As he continues to push the boundaries of research, Dekorsy remains open to forging new international partnerships that can enhance the impact of his work on a global scale.
